What is consular processing?

Consular processing is the procedure used when a person applies for a U.S. immigrant visa (green card) through a U.S. embassy or consulate outside the United States. Once the petition is approved by USCIS, the applicant completes the process abroad and enters the U.S. as a permanent resident.
