Affirmative asylum is usually filed with USCIS but defensive asylum is when a person is defending themselves in immigration court to avoid deportation

An immigrant will attend interview at USCIS to apply for affirmative asylum. Defensive asylum will be at the immigration court during removal proceedings to prove why you shouldn’t be deported
