Since moving from Ghana to Idaho with my family, I’ve been attending high school here. I’m under 16 and still trying to understand how my immigration status could affect my future. Will being a minor in school make it easier for me to get legal status or stay in the U.S. permanently?

Being a minor doesn’t automatically grant legal status, but there may be options available depending on your family’s situation. You can’t apply on your own unless certain protections apply.

If you’ve faced neglect, abuse, or abandonment by one or both parents, you might qualify for Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) status. This could lead to permanent residency. It’s a complex process, but it exists to protect vulnerable minors already in the U.S.

In most cases, your family’s immigration status will determine your own. If your parents or guardians apply for asylum, adjustment of status, or any other relief, you may be included in their case. Schools don’t report students to immigration authorities, so your education is safe. It’s wise for your parents to speak with an immigration attorney soon.
