Since arriving in Iowa from France on a J-1 visa in early 2025, I’ve been participating in a cultural exchange program as a language assistant at a local high school. The experience has been great, but the program is ending in September, and I’d like to stay in the U.S. longer, possibly by transitioning to a different visa or legal status. I’ve heard that some J-1 holders face a two-year home residency requirement, but I’m not sure if it applies to me. I also don’t know if I can apply for another visa while I’m still here. What should I be considering at this point?

First, check your DS-2019 form and visa stamp. If they indicate you’re subject to the two-year home residency requirement, you cannot change to another visa or apply for a green card unless you fulfill the requirement or get a waiver.

If you're not subject to the residency rule, you can apply to change status from within the U.S., for example, to F-1 if you want to study or H-1B if you find a job and employer sponsor. Timing is critical, so don’t wait until your J-1 expires.

If you are subject to the two-year rule but qualify for a waiver (such as fear of persecution, exceptional hardship to a U.S. citizen relative, or a no-objection statement from your home government), you can file for one through USCIS and the Department of State.
