What happens if an H1B visa holder is laid off, and how long can they stay in the U.S. while searching for a new job?

If an h1B visa holder is laid off, they have a 60 days grace period to remain in the U.S. while searching for new job. During this time, they can find a new employer to sponsor them or change their visa status
