Living in New York as a student has brought unexpected changes, including meeting someone I see a future with. As we talk seriously about marriage, I am trying to understand how this decision could affect my immigration situation. I come from Nigeria and want to make sure love and legal status align properly. What should I consider before moving forward with marriage while still in school?

Marriage can affect your status depending on your partner’s immigration situation. A genuine relationship is required for any immigration benefit.

If your partner is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, marriage may open a path to adjust status. Timing and compliance with your student visa are important.

Immigration officers closely review student-to-marriage cases. You should maintain your student status until any new status is approved. Consulting an immigration attorney can help you plan the transition safely.
