Living in Alaska has been a huge adjustment after moving here from Ghana, but I'm starting to get settled. I’m currently in the U.S. on a student visa (F-1) and just finished my first semester at a university in Anchorage. Lately, I’ve been thinking about taking a break for family reasons and possibly switching to part-time coursework next semester. I know F-1 students are required to maintain full-time enrollment, but I’m not sure what options I have if personal issues affect my studies. I don’t want to fall out of status or violate the terms of my visa. What should I consider before making any changes?

F-1 students must stay enrolled full-time to maintain status. Dropping below that without prior authorization could result in losing your status, so always speak with your Designated School Official (DSO) before making schedule changes.

You may qualify for a Reduced Course Load (RCL) if you’re experiencing medical or personal hardship. Your DSO can authorize this under specific conditions, but it must be approved before dropping credits.

If you anticipate needing more than a temporary break, consider applying for a leave of absence and re-entering the U.S. with a new I-20 later. This avoids violating your status and gives you a clean re-start when you're ready.
