I’ve been living in the U.S. for several years and plan to apply for citizenship when eligible. I’m concerned about past gaps in employment and periods when I relied on family support. Will this negatively affect my naturalization application, and what do officers typically look for in these situations?

Unemployment alone does not disqualify someone from naturalization. Officers focus more on good moral character, tax compliance, and lawful residence. Being financially supported by family is generally acceptable if done legally.

What matters most is honesty and documentation. If you filed taxes correctly and did not misuse public benefits, employment gaps usually aren’t an issue. Officers understand that life circumstances change.

I had periods without work and was worried, but my interview focused more on residency and conduct. Being truthful and prepared eased my concerns.
