I’m originally from Eastern Nigeria and I recently moved to Florida on a visitor visa. I’m starting to feel like I’d love to stay here longer, maybe even permanently. But I’m not sure what options are realistic for someone in my situation. Can I adjust my status from inside the U.S., and what are the best immigration options I should consider at this point?

You’ll need to be cautious. Visitor visas don’t allow direct adjustment of status unless something changes, like marrying a U.S. citizen or qualifying for asylum. Overstaying could cause serious problems, so speak with an immigration attorney before making any moves.

If you fear returning to Nigeria due to specific threats, you might explore asylum. That process is complex and requires strong evidence, but it’s worth looking into if it applies. Just know, it must be filed within a year of your arrival unless there are exceptions.

Another option could be applying for a student visa (F-1) if you’re interested in continuing your education here. You’d have to return to Nigeria and apply at the U.S. embassy, though. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s a path people take to stay longer legally and build future opportunities.
