I’m originally from Armenia and currently living in New Orleans while finishing my education. By next fall, I plan to move to Massachusetts for a job opportunity once I graduate. I’m unsure how this relocation will affect my current immigration status and any applications I may need to continue or update after completing school. Since I’m transitioning from a student to working in the U.S., what steps should I take to make sure there is no gap in my legal status when I move? Should I apply for work authorization before leaving Louisiana, or wait until I arrive in Massachusetts?

You should make sure your current status remains valid until you secure proper work authorization. Planning ahead helps you avoid a gap in status during your move.

If you’re on a student visa, look into Optional Practical Training (OPT) or other work authorization options before graduation. Filing early ensures you can start working when the job begins. Also, you’ll need to update USCIS with your new Massachusetts address once you relocate.

Start by speaking with your school’s international student office about your exact program completion date and available employment options. If you qualify for OPT, apply well in advance because processing can take months. Keep in mind that once you move, updating your address with USCIS within 10 days is required. You should also confirm that your future employer can support any necessary sponsorship. Staying proactive will help you transition smoothly into your new life in Massachusetts.
