I’m from Zimbabwe and currently in the United States considering my long-term future here. I’m thinking about whether I should apply for a work visa, extend my current stay, or see if there are family-based options available to me. I’m confused about what steps to take first and how my current status affects what I’m eligible for. What should I do?

First, confirm what type of status you currently hold and when it expires. That determines what options are legally available.

If you have a temporary status, you may be able to change to a work or student category by applying before your current stay ends. A qualified immigration attorney can help you assess whether employment, family sponsorship, or another route is best for you.

If you have close family who are U.S. citizens or green card holders, that path may offer a more secure option. If not, consider whether an employer could sponsor you. Maintaining lawful status during the entire process is crucial. Planning early will give you more choices.
