I’m from Venezuela and applied for asylum over a year ago. I haven’t heard anything back and my case status hasn’t changed. Is this normal, and is there anything I can do while waiting?

Yes, long waiting periods are common in asylum cases due to backlogs. You can check your case status online and make sure USCIS has your current address to avoid missing notices.

After 150 days, you may apply for a work permit if you haven’t caused delays in your case. This can help you work legally while you wait for an interview or decision.

I waited nearly two years for my interview. Staying patient is difficult but staying compliant helps. If your wait becomes excessive, consulting an immigration attorney about next steps can be helpful.
