I’m from Tolga, and I’ve been living in Wisconsin for almost six years now. My green card is set to expire in a few months, and I’m not entirely sure how early I should start the renewal process. I’ve heard that delays are common and that sometimes people even lose their work authorization while waiting. I want to make sure I don’t run into problems with employment or travel during the renewal. What’s the best way to renew my green card smoothly and avoid gaps in my status?

You can renew your green card by filing Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, online or by mail. It’s best to apply about six months before your card expires. Make sure to keep copies of your application and the receipt notice in case your employer needs proof of your status.

USCIS processing times can vary, but applying early reduces the risk of gaps in documentation. Always track your case status online after filing Form I-90.

If your green card expires while the renewal is pending, your I-90 receipt notice serves as temporary proof of lawful status. You can show it to employers or during travel within the U.S. to verify authorization. Avoid international trips until you receive your new card. Staying proactive and informed will help prevent unnecessary complications.
