I’m from the Philippines and living in Colorado as a green card holder. I want to apply for U.S. citizenship soon. What are the key requirements I need to meet before applying?

You'll need to have been a green card holder for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen) and meet specific residency requirements.

You must demonstrate good moral character, pass a background check, and show adherence to U.S. laws and values to be eligible for citizenship.

You'll need to pass an English language test and a civics test, showing your ability to read, write, and speak basic English and have knowledge of U.S. history and government

You must have had your green card for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen) and have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 30 months during that time. Continuous residence and good moral character are also required.

You’ll need to pass a civics and English test, unless you qualify for an exemption due to age or disability. You must also file Form N-400 and attend a biometrics appointment and interview as part of the process.

Make sure you haven’t spent long periods outside the U.S. without a reentry permit, as that could affect your continuous residence requirement. Trips longer than six months may trigger additional scrutiny from USCIS.
