I’m from Russia and currently living in Utah on an F-1 student visa. I’ve been studying computer science at a local university for over a year, but I recently received an offer to transfer to another school in a different state that has a better research program. I’m not sure how this transfer might affect my visa status or SEVIS record. Do I need to get new approval from USCIS before transferring, or can I just notify my Designated School Official (DSO) and move forward with the process?

You don’t need to apply for a new visa, but your SEVIS record must be officially transferred to the new school. Your new DSO will issue you a new Form I-20. You must begin classes within five months of leaving your previous institution.

When transferring between schools under F-1 status, the key is maintaining continuous enrollment. You must first inform your current DSO about your intent to transfer, who will then release your SEVIS record to the new school. After receiving your new I-20, you should report to your new DSO upon arrival. Make sure you don’t have a gap longer than five months between programs.

Always coordinate both DSOs before moving to avoid losing your F-1 status.
