I’m from Nigeria and currently in New York on a valid visa. My friend invited me to an event happening next week, and I really want to attend. However, I’m not fully sure if participating in this type of event might affect my visa status or cause any immigration issues. What should I do?

If the event is social, cultural, or recreational and does not involve work or payment, you should generally be fine attending. Make sure your visa category allows you to stay in the U.S. during those dates. Keep proof of your valid status with you.

If you are unsure whether the event could be considered employment or volunteer work, double-check your visa rules. Even unpaid activity can be restricted in some categories. A quick review with an immigration attorney can help you stay safe.

Always stay within the purpose of your current visa. If the event requires you to perform, speak publicly, or help with organization, that could be treated as unauthorized activity. When in doubt, ask for legal guidance before participating to avoid issues with future travel or visa applications.
