I’m from Chad and currently living in Mississippi on a B1/B2 visa. I came here to visit family and learn more about opportunities in the U.S., but now I’m seriously considering staying longer. I know I can’t work legally with a visitor visa, but I’m wondering if there’s any way to extend my stay or eventually change my status while I’m still here. Are there options for someone from Chad who wants to explore school, work, or even permanent residency without leaving the country?

You might be able to file Form I-539 to extend your visitor stay, but that won’t allow you to work or study long-term. You’ll need a more permanent visa for that.

If you want to study, you could look into changing your status to an F-1 student visa. But USCIS is strict. You’ll need to show intent to study full-time and enough financial support. It’s best to start this process before your current stay expires.

If you marry a U.S. citizen or qualify for asylum, you could potentially adjust your status without leaving the country. Asylum is only an option if you fear returning to Chad for serious, protected reasons. Marriage-based green cards involve interviews and background checks, but they’re a common path. Just be honest and careful, any visa misuse can impact future immigration plans.
