I’m from Azerbaijan and recently moved to Indiana on a student visa to attend university. My wife is still back home, and we’re trying to figure out the best way for her to come live with me while I’m studying here. I’ve heard she might be able to get an F-2 dependent visa, but I’m not sure what the process looks like or how long it usually takes. Some friends told me she wouldn’t be allowed to work on an F-2, while others said she might be able to in certain cases. Can anyone share how this works and what we should expect?

Yes, your wife can apply for an F-2 visa, but she won’t be allowed to work in the US under that status. The process starts with you sending her your I-20 and other documents.

She needs to apply at the US embassy in Azerbaijan using your I-20, proof of marriage, and her passport.

For the F-2 visa, you’ll need to send her your updated I-20 showing her as a dependent, proof of your financial ability to support both of you, and your marriage certificate. She then completes the DS-160 form and schedules a visa interview in Baku or another embassy location. Processing time varies but is often a few weeks. F-2 holders can study part-time or full-time but cannot work, so she should plan accordingly before coming.
