I’m currently waiting for a decision on my adjustment of status application, and it has been pending much longer than expected. I already completed biometrics and submitted all requested documents. I’m worried because my work permit is about to expire, and I rely on my job to support my family. What happens if my work permit expires while my green card application is still pending, and what steps should I take to avoid losing my job?

If your work permit is expiring, you should file for renewal as early as allowed. Many applicants qualify for automatic extensions once a renewal is properly filed, which can keep you legally employed even if the physical card hasn’t arrived yet. Employers can often accept the receipt notice as proof. Always check whether your category qualifies for this extension and keep copies of all filings for your records.

Long processing times are unfortunately common, and expiring work permits cause a lot of stress. The most important thing is not to let your authorization lapse without taking action. Filing a renewal on time protects your ability to work legally. Communicate with your employer early so they understand the situation. Staying proactive can prevent unnecessary job loss while your case remains pending.

I experienced this delay myself and worried constantly. I filed my renewal immediately when eligible and gave my employer the receipt notice. They were understanding once I explained the process. While waiting is frustrating, maintaining legal work authorization is usually manageable if deadlines are followed carefully.
