I’m currently in the U.S. on a diversity visa. I’ve just arrived. What steps do I need to take now to maintain my permanent resident status?

Once you enter the U.S. on a diversity visa, you become a lawful permanent resident. You should receive your physical green card by mail within a few weeks. It’s important to keep your address updated with USCIS using Form AR-11.

To maintain your green card, avoid long trips outside the U.S. If you plan to be abroad for more than 6 months, consider applying for a reentry permit to preserve your residency status.

Make sure to renew your green card every 10 years and file taxes each year as a U.S. resident. Keeping clean records and staying in compliance with immigration laws helps protect your status.
