If a person wins the Diversity Visa (DV) lottery but is already in the U.S. on another visa, how do they adjust status?

They can file Form I-485 for adjustment of status if their number is current and they are eligible.

If their current visa is valid, they can remain in the U.S. while the green card is processed.

If out of status, they might need to consular process abroad, which could be risky.

Timing is critical since the DV must be completed within the fiscal year or the opportunity is lost.
