If a person on a visitor visa (B1/B2) has a medical emergency in the U.S., how does it affect their immigration status?

A medical emergency itself doesn’t automatically affect status, but overstaying while recovering could.

They can apply for an extension of stay (Form I-539) explaining the emergency as a valid reason.

Having proof like hospital records and doctor’s letters is critical for USCIS approval.

Without extension approval, overstaying could trigger future visa refusals or entry bans.
