I entered the U.S. through family sponsorship from my sister and I’m waiting on my green card. My work permit hasn’t arrived yet, but I’ve been offered a cash-paying job. Is it risky to accept it while I wait?

Yes, it’s risky. Working without authorization can create problems during your green card process. Even cash jobs count as unauthorized employment and could affect your eligibility or cause delays if discovered.

Until your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) is approved, you’re not allowed to work. Many people think cash work is “invisible,” but immigration reviews can uncover it later through tax or background checks.

I waited for my EAD before working, even though it was hard. It protected my case long-term. If possible, avoid working until you have written authorization to stay safe.
