I came to the United States on an F1 visa to pursue a master’s degree in counseling. After graduating, I completed one year of Optional Practical Training (OPT). When my OPT ended, I decided to return to school to earn an associate degree in nursing. Remember, I have never had an associate or bachelor’s degree in the United States. Now, as I approach graduation from the nursing program, I want to know if I am eligible to receive OPT for nursing.

Based on your situation, it is unlikely you are eligible for another period of Optional Practical Training (OPT) after completing your Associate Degree in Nursing, because OPT is generally granted per degree level: F-1 students are typically eligible for 12 months of OPT at each higher degree level (e.g., Bachelor's, Master's, PhD)

It's crucial to discuss your situation with your Designated School Official (DSO) at your current institution for personalized advice and confirmation of your eligibility.

Yes, you should be eligible for OPT after completing your associate degree in nursing because U.S. immigration rules allow one year of OPT for each progressively higher level of study (associate, bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate). Since you have never used OPT at the associate degree level before, you can apply for it after completing your nursing program.
