I applied for U.S. citizenship and I’m worried about a past mistake where I forgot to list a short trip abroad on my N-400. It wasn’t intentional, but I’m afraid USCIS will see it as misrepresentation. What should I do if I realize there was an error on my application?

If you notice an error, it’s best to correct it as soon as possible. USCIS allows applicants to clarify or amend answers during the naturalization interview. Being honest and proactive usually works in your favor. Unintentional mistakes are treated differently than deliberate misrepresentation.

At the interview, you can explain that the omission was accidental and provide the correct travel information. Officers understand that people make mistakes, especially on long forms. What matters most is consistency and truthfulness once the issue is identified.

Many applicants correct small errors during their interview without problems. Trying to hide a mistake would be more damaging than acknowledging it. Prepare a clear explanation and supporting documents if needed.
