I am from Congo, and I recently met the love of my life, who is also from Congo but is now a lawful permanent resident of the United States. We are serious about our relationship and are planning our future together. I want to understand what immigration options are available to us, how marriage could affect my ability to live and work in the U.S., and what the process and timelines may look like. I am also concerned about documentation, interview requirements, and whether my current location affects the process. What are the safest and most realistic steps for us to take?

As a green card holder, your partner can petition for you after marriage under the family-based immigration category. The process takes time, but it is a recognized and lawful pathway.

If you marry, your partner can file Form I-130 on your behalf. You may need to wait for a visa number to become available before moving forward. Your location inside or outside the U.S., will determine whether you adjust status or apply through consular processing.

You will need to show that your relationship is genuine through documents and interviews. Processing times can vary depending on backlogs and your country of residence. During the wait, you must maintain lawful status if you are in the U.S. Speaking with an immigration attorney can help you avoid delays and mistakes.
