Hi, I’m from Tajikistan and I’ve been living in the U.S. for over a year now. I’m thinking about applying for asylum, but I read that you’re supposed to apply within the first 12 months of arrival. Is it too late for me to apply now?

The one-year deadline is real, but there are exceptions. If something changed in your country or in your personal situation after you arrived, like new threats or political changes. Just be sure to clearly explain the delay when you file.

I know someone from Tajikistan who applied for asylum after 14 months. She had to prove changed circumstances, and USCIS accepted my explanation. Just so you know, It's not easy, but it's possible if you have good documentation and a serious reason for the delay. Talk to a lawyer if you can.... it can improve your chances and help you with the proper documentation and phrasing your situation well.
