Here’s my situation: I’m originally from Mexico but have been living in Kansas for almost two years now. I came to visit family, but over time, life here started feeling more like home. I’m not sure about my legal options, but I really want to stay permanently and eventually work legally. I’ve heard about family petitions and adjustment of status, but I don’t know where to begin. What would be the best way for me to start this process?

If you have close U.S. citizen relatives, like a spouse, parent, or adult child, they may be able to petition for you. That could open a path to a green card. The key is to confirm your current immigration status and eligibility before filing anything.

If you entered the U.S. without a visa, the process may be more complex. However, you could still have options through family-based waivers or humanitarian programs.

It’s important to first review your immigration entry and any past applications or records. An attorney can help identify if you qualify for adjustment, a waiver, or even a future legalization program. Avoid leaving the country until you have professional advice. Taking early steps now can prevent bigger problems later.
