Finishing my master’s program feels like a turning point after two years of intense study and adjustment. While many of my classmates are focused on job offers, I am drawn toward starting my own business and building something independent in the United States. The idea excites me, but it also raises a lot of immigration questions I cannot ignore. I want to stay compliant with my student status while planning for the future. What immigration considerations, restrictions, or visa options should I understand before launching a business here, and how realistic is entrepreneurship after graduating as an international student?

Student status does not generally allow self-employment or running a business. Any business activity must stay within what your visa permits.

Some graduates use OPT to work in roles related to their field, but this usually requires employment with a registered company rather than self-sponsorship. Certain limited business activities may be allowed if structured correctly. Careful compliance is essential.

Long-term options may include employment-based visas or investment-based pathways, depending on the business and funding. Each option has strict requirements and timelines. Consulting an immigration professional before taking action can help you avoid status violations.
