Being in the United States for the first time as a student from Azerbaijan has been an incredible opportunity, especially with the scholarship that made it possible. Still, I feel pressure to help support my family back home, and I’ve been wondering how much work I’m actually allowed to do while studying here. I’ve heard there are strict rules for international students and that working without permission can create serious immigration problems. I want to understand what is allowed, what isn’t, and what steps I should take before trying to earn any income. How should I approach this situation?

F-1 students can only work under specific conditions, and unauthorized employment can jeopardize your status.

On-campus work is usually allowed up to 20 hours per week during the academic year. Off-campus work requires special authorization, such as CPT for training related to your major or OPT for practical experience. You must get proper approval before starting any job. Your school’s international student office can guide you through the process and confirm what applies to your program.

If supporting your family is a major concern, explore whether you qualify for economic hardship employment authorization. This option has specific requirements but may help in difficult situations. An immigration advisor can help you understand whether it fits your circumstances.
