After arriving in Connecticut from Nigeria on a student visa (F-1) in January 2025, I’ve been doing my best to stay on top of classes and meet the visa requirements. My degree program includes an internship component, and one of my professors recently connected me with a company that’s willing to take me on. However, I know there are strict rules about employment on an F-1 visa, and I don’t want to take any chances that could affect my status. The internship would be paid and off campus, but it’s related to my field of study. What should I do to make sure I’m complying with immigration rules?

If the internship is required by your program or part of your major, you may be eligible for Curricular Practical Training (CPT). You’ll need authorization from your school’s DSO and must receive it before starting the internship.

You must have completed at least one full academic year before being eligible for CPT unless your program requires immediate participation. Make sure the job offer letter clearly outlines the duties and how it relates to your field of study.

Never begin working without written CPT authorization on your I-20. Unauthorized employment is a serious F-1 violation that can lead to termination of your SEVIS record and loss of status.
