While living and working in Mali, I’ve been considering moving to the United States because one of my cousins runs a small business there and suggested I might help expand it. I’m also thinking about supporting my family back home. Is it possible to immigrate through both a work opportunity and family connection?

A cousin cannot directly sponsor you for U.S. immigration benefits. Family sponsorship is generally limited to close relatives such as spouses, parents, children, and siblings.

However, your cousin could potentially hire you if the business is able to sponsor a work visa. This usually requires demonstrating that the position qualifies for a specific visa category and that the company can meet sponsorship requirements. The process can involve government approvals and documentation about the job and your qualifications.

If the business grows significantly, there may be additional employment-based immigration pathways available. Many people pursue work-based options while maintaining family connections for personal support rather than immigration sponsorship.
