When my parents decided to return to Jordan because of recent political changes and uncertainty, everything about my situation in the United States shifted overnight. We originally relocated together, and I always assumed we would handle immigration decisions as a family. Now I am still in school, which is currently allowing me to remain here, but I feel exposed and unsure about what happens next. I worry about what my options are if my parents stay abroad long-term and whether my education alone can protect me. What should I understand about maintaining status, future planning, and possible risks in this situation?

As long as you are maintaining valid student status, you are allowed to remain in the United States. Your situation becomes risky only if you fall out of compliance or your status expires.

Your parents’ departure does not automatically affect your legal status if your visa is independent of theirs. However, future options may be limited without family-based support. Planning ahead before graduation is important.

You should stay closely connected with your school’s international student office to ensure compliance. Keep all documents updated and avoid gaps in enrollment. Long-term options may include employment-based paths or further education. Speaking with an immigration attorney can help you prepare before your current status ends.
