When I left Nigeria to pursue my master’s program here in Wyoming, I had to leave my wife and two kids behind. It has been very difficult being apart, and they really want to join me. Since I am only on a student visa (F1), I am confused about whether I can sponsor them to come over while I finish school. I’ve heard about an F2 visa for dependents but don’t know how it works. Can my wife and children come stay with me during my studies?

Yes, as an F1 student you can apply for your wife and children to join you under the F2 dependent visa category.

The school you’re attending must first issue new I-20 forms for them. After that, they would apply for the F2 visa at the U.S. embassy in Nigeria.

Keep in mind, F2 spouses cannot work in the U.S. while here. Your children, however, can attend school.

Your family can apply for F2 visas as dependents of your F1 status. The process begins with your school providing I-20s for each dependent. They will then schedule visa interviews at the consulate in Nigeria. While they can live with you during your studies, they won’t have work authorization.

Yes, they can come on F2 visas as your dependents.
