What is the difference between asylum and refugee status?

Asylum is applied for from within the U.S. or at the border; refugee status is granted while you are outside the U.S.

Both statuses offer similar protections, but the process and location differ.

Each requires you to prove a well-founded fear of persecution in your home country.
