“Extreme hardship” refers to significant difficulty or suffering that a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (the qualifying relative) would face if the applicant is denied reentry to the U.S. after leaving for consular processing. It must go beyond the normal hardship of family separation and may include medical issues, financial loss, emotional or psychological effects, and conditions in the home country.
