What if I stay outside the U.S. for too long as a green card holder?

If it’s more than six months, immigration officers may ask questions.

More than a year, you’ll need a re-entry permit or you could lose your green card.

If you stay abroad too long—especially over 1 year without a reentry permit—you risk being seen as giving up your green card and could be denied reentry.
