If an adjustment of status applicant leaves the United States without Advance Parole, USCIS will usually consider the I-485 application abandoned and deny it. The main exceptions apply to individuals who maintain valid H-1B or L-1 status and reenter the U.S. in that same status with a valid visa and approval notice. For most applicants, however, departure before Advance Parole approval can create serious complications and require restarting the immigration process through consular processing abroad. Because of these risks, applicants are generally advised to wait until the Advance Parole document is approved and physically received before making international travel plans.
