F-1 students are generally required to maintain full-time enrollment each academic term. Dropping below full-time without prior authorization from your DSO can result in termination of your student status. In limited cases, reduced course loads may be permitted for academic, medical, or final semester reasons, but approval must be granted in advance.

Falling below full-time status without authorization can create serious immigration complications. If a violation occurs, you may need to apply for reinstatement or depart the United States and reenter with a new I-20. Acting quickly and communicating with your DSO is critical if academic challenges arise.
