They said my green card is only for ten years, and I will have to renew it. Does that mean my residency is not actually permanent?

Your status doesn’t expire, only the card does.

It is just the card that expired which can cause travel or employment issues if you don't renew

Your status is permanent, you only have to renew the card like any ID card
