Since arriving in Maine from Zimbabwe about six months ago, I’ve been living with extended family while waiting for my asylum interview. I filed my asylum application within the first month of arriving and completed biometrics shortly after. Lately, I’ve been worried because I haven’t received any updates, and I’ve heard that wait times can stretch out for years. I’m trying to stay informed and follow all the rules, but I’m also unsure about how to prepare or what steps I can take while I wait. What should I realistically expect during this period, and is there anything I should be doing now to stay on top of my case?

Long wait times are common. While you wait, make sure to keep your mailing address updated with USCIS and monitor your case online. Missing a notice or interview date could lead to denial or referral to immigration court.

If 150 days have passed since you filed your asylum application, you can apply for a work permit using Form I-765. This helps you legally support yourself while waiting for your interview or decision.

Use this time to collect and organize evidence that supports your asylum claim, documents, affidavits, and anything that shows your fear of returning to Zimbabwe. This preparation will help you respond confidently when your interview is scheduled.
