Since arriving in Arizona from Somalia, I’ve been hearing a lot about Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and asylum. Some people say TPS is easier to apply for, while others suggest asylum might offer a more permanent solution. I arrived recently and haven’t applied for anything yet, but I want to stay in the U.S. legally and avoid problems in the future. Can someone in my situation apply for both TPS and asylum at the same time? And which one gives a better chance at staying here long-term?

Yes, you can apply for both TPS and asylum at the same time. They are separate processes and one doesn’t block the other.

TPS is temporary and doesn’t automatically lead to a green card, while asylum, if approved, can lead to permanent residency after 1 year.

Applying for asylum should be done within one year of entering the U.S., unless you qualify for an exception, so don’t wait too long to file.
