Setting things up for my company has brought me to the United States on a short visit, mostly to prepare for a longer assignment that is supposed to start around April next year. I am from Iceland, and the plan is for me to stay in the U.S. for about two years while I work on a major project. Since I only entered with a visiting visa this time, I want to understand what work visa I should be preparing for and what steps my employer and I need to start organizing now.

If your company is sending you to work in the U.S., the most common options are the L-1 visa for intracompany transfers or the H-1B if your role qualifies as a specialty position. The right choice depends on your existing position, your company structure abroad, and the duties you will have in the United States. Your employer will need to prepare documentation well before April. Starting early makes the process smoother since these visas require strong evidence.

You should also check whether your company meets the requirements for transferring employees, especially if considering the L-1. Your time on a visitor visa cannot be used for work or setting up employment activities. Make sure all plans stay compliant until the correct visa is issued.

Your employer’s HR or legal team should begin gathering documents now. Early planning helps prevent delays when it is time to file.
