What are the language proficiency requirements for U.S. citizenship, and are there any exemptions?

If you are applying for US citizenship, you must show English proficiency, but exemptions exist for 50+ year olds with 20 years of residency and 55+ year olds with 15 years of residency. They will not do the English test but must take the civics test in their native language. Some disabled people may also be exempted.

For US citizenship, people need to know basic English for reading, writing, and talking. Some people have exemptions if they are 50 years old and above with 20 years of living in america
