If your visa expires but you are still in the U.S. with a valid status like a student or worker, you are usually fine the visa is just for entry.

If both your visa and your status expire, you are considered out of status and could face deportation.

Overstaying your visa can lead to serious penalties, like being barred from returning to the U.S. for years.

You may be able to fix your status by applying for an extension, change of status, or adjustment of status but timing is critical.

If you overstay by more than 180 days but less than a year, you could be banned for 3 years and if you overstay by more than a year, you could be banned for 10 years.
