I’m on a dependent visa and just got married to a citizen. Can I apply for a green card?

Yes, you can apply for a green card adjustment of status if you are in the U.S. and married to a U.S. citizen.

U.S. citizens can sponsor their spouses as “immediate relatives,” which means there is no wait for a visa number.

You will need to file Form I-130 (petition for spouse) and Form I-485 (green card application) together if you’re adjusting inside the U.S.

If you entered on a visa like H-4, L-2, or F-2, your dependent status doesn’t prevent you from adjusting once married to a citizen.
