I’ve been in the U.S. on an F1 visa for 6 years (Bachelor’s + Master’s). Will this affect my chances of getting a green card?

Being on an F-1 visa for six years doesn't directly affect your green card chances, but it does mean that you’ll need a clear path to a green card, whether through employment, family, or another route. If you're applying based on a job offer, the employer will need to sponsor you, and they may need to justify the timing

Your time on an F-1 visa won’t automatically hurt your chances of getting a green card, but there are a few things to keep in mind. For instance, you’ll need a job offer from a U.S. employer or another pathway (like family sponsorship) to start the green card process. Some people who have been in the U.S. on an F-1 for a long time do face questions about their intentions when applying for a green card, but as long as you follow the right steps, it shouldn’t be a huge issue.

If you’re in the U.S. on an F-1 and applying for a green card, your status and the time spent on the visa may come under review, but it won’t automatically disqualify you from obtaining permanent residency.
