I'm a U.S. citizen but my spouse is undocumented. Can the U.S. immigration authorities detain and deport my spouse if we're married?

As a U.S. citizen, you can sponsor your spouse for a green card, which may provide protection from deportation

If your spouse is encountered by immigration authorities, they may still be detained and placed in removal proceedings, potentially leading to deportation.

Marriage to a U.S. citizen doesn’t prevent deportation. However, your spouse may qualify for legal relief, such as adjustment of status or waivers. Consult an immigration attorney for guidance.
