I'm a permanent resident but I want to travel abroad for a long while, would I need to get a re-entry permit?

If you'll be outside the US for more than 6 months, apply for a re-entry permit to maintain your permanent resident status

If you're unable to return to the US within 6 months, file Form I-131 to apply for a travel document
