How does a Green Card holder apply for a re-entry permit if they plan to stay outside the U.S. for an extended period?

To apply for a re-entry permit, you must file Form I-131 (“Application for Travel Document”). This form will be collecting details about your planned trip, your foreign travel since becoming a green card holder if it does apply to you, and whether you've been properly filing U.S. tax returns.

You will file the application before leaving the US. The permit will allow you to stay outside the US for two years without losing your permenent residence.
